A university student has been indicted for allegedly accessing Taiwan High Speed Rail's communications system and sending a false alarm that caused four trains to make emergency stops.
The Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office says the student, surnamed Lin (林), transmitted a "General Alarm" signal in April while he was on a bus near Taichung HSR Station.
The warning was automatically sent to nearby trains, prompting three passenger trains and one out-of-service train to apply their emergency brakes.
The incident caused a total of 48 minutes of delays.
Prosecutors say Lin used a radio programmed with the system's settings to access its communications network.
A second man, surnamed Chen (陳), has also been indicted for allegedly providing the radio and system information.
Prosecutors are seeking a two-year prison sentence for Lin.
