Taichung Power Plant Begins Demolishing Coal Units

Taipower has begun dismantling two coal-fired generating units at its Taichung Power Plant after 36 years of operation.
The state-run utility says Units 1 and 2 were shut down on September 30th and officially retired the following day ... when demolition work began.
The two units produced nearly 280 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity during their operating life ... helping supply power to households and industries in central Taiwan.
Taipower says the units are being retired as new natural gas-fired generators come online ... as part of efforts to reduce coal use and support Taiwan's energy transition.
The demolition project will take about 28 months and involves major equipment including boilers, turbines and a 252-meter-high chimney.
Taipower expects the work to be completed in early 2029 ... with the site eventually supporting the second phase of the plant's new natural gas-fired power project.
