Experts Call for Greater Support for Youth Mental Health

Mental health experts are raising concerns over a doubling in youth suicides in Taiwan over the past decade ... specifically among those aged 15 to 24.
They also pointed to government figures which show schools reported over 20-thousand suicide and self-harm incidents involving students in 2024 .... more than 17 times the figure recorded eight years prior.
Psychiatrists say mental health treatment should not focus only on children ... as their emotional difficulties can sometimes reflect problems affecting the wider family.
They are calling for a two-way screening approach that includes parents and other primary caregivers.
Psychiatrists say when parents seek treatment for depression, anxiety or other mental health problems ... doctors should also ask about their children's emotional well-being.
And when children seek help for depression, self-harm or suicidal thoughts ... their parents' or caregivers' mental health should also be assessed.
