Francis Halzen has won the Nobel Prize in physics for his work with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos from space.
The 82-year-old scientist, originally from Belgium, is affiliated with the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The IceCube observatory is located deep beneath the ice at the South Pole.
Nobel Committee for Physics chair Mark Pearce praised Halzen's scientific vision.
