The Nobel Prize in medicine has been awarded to three scientists for research into how the brain switches nerve cell activity on and off.
Karl Deisseroth {DICE-er-ohth}, Peter Hegemann {HAY-guh-mahn} and Georg Nagel {GAY-ork NAH-guhl} were recognized for their work on light-gated ion channels and a technique known as optogenetics.
The Nobel Assembly says the method is now used around the world to study the brain and better understand how nerve cells work.
Deisseroth is based in the U-S, while Hegemann and Nagel are based in Germany.
The prize was announced at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.
This year's prize is worth 12 million Swedish kronor, or about 1.2 million U-S dollars.
The Nobel Prize in physics will be announced Tuesday, followed by chemistry and literature later this week.
