Nikon photo contest winner accused of using AI
Posted on 2026-10-01 19:59:14
The winner of Nikon's Small World in Motion photography competition is facing
questions over whether his winning video was made using A-I.

The video was submitted by Dr. Ning Xu of China's Tsinghua University.

Xu says it shows tiny, hair-like structures called cilia inside the airways
of a child with a rare disease.

He admits using A-I to increase the contrast of the grayscale images, but
denies breaking the competition's rules.

Other scientists question the footage, saying the cilia appear unusually
large and move in ways they consider abnormal.

One critic says some cilia "appear from nowhere", while another says the
video contains a watermark suggesting it was A-I-generated.

Nikon says it has found no rule violations so far, but will provide an update.
