Kaohsiung commissions study into possible 24-hour international airport

Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai says the city has commissioned an overseas
consulting firm to conduct a feasibility study for a new 24-hour
international airport.

Chen says the proposal is aimed at meeting Kaohsiung's long-term development
needs ... particularly growing air cargo demand from the semiconductor
industry.

He says the city's current Xiaogang Airport ... which is subject to a
nighttime curfew ... will not be able to meet future demand.

Chen says a new airport would also strengthen Taiwan's resilience ... if
airports in the north were disrupted by earthquakes or other natural
disasters.

He says such disruptions could seriously affect the semiconductor industry
and passenger travel ... making the issue a broader national security
concern.
