Aftershocks possible after magnitude 5.9 quake strikes off Hualien coast

The Central Weather Administration is warning of possible aftershocks of up
to magnitude 5 over the next three days ...

... following a magnitude 5.9 earthquake off the east coast this afternoon.

The quake struck around 1 P-M, 136 kilometers east of Hualien County Hall, at
a depth of 13.3 kilometers.

The C-W-A says the quake was caused by the Philippine Sea Plate moving
beneath the Eurasian Plate.

Because the epicenter was far from Taiwan, most areas experienced only weak
shaking.

The strongest shaking reached an intensity of 2 in parts of Hualien, Yilan,
Changhua, Yunlin and Chiayi counties.
