Traffic deaths fall slightly in first seven months

Traffic deaths are down in Taiwan this year so far ... but deaths among older
people are up slightly and could rise further.

According to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, almost 1
thousand 600 traffic deaths were recorded in the first seven months ... down
over 1 percent from the same period a year ago.

However, deaths among older people rose five percent to almost 700.

The increase was concentrated in Taoyuan, Taichung and Hualien ... where
motorcycle accidents accounted for half of elderly traffic deaths, while
pedestrian accidents accounted for another 20 percent.

The ministry says the fourth quarter is typically the peak season for traffic
deaths among older people ...

... and advises wearing bright or reflective clothing when going out during
early hours or at night.
