11 workers remain hospitalized after power plant accident

A worker has regained consciousness after falling into a hydrochloric acid
tank at a power plant in Kaohsiung, while 10 others remain hospitalized.

TaiPower says the accident happened this morning at the Nanpu Power Plant
while contractor workers were carrying out maintenance on a hydrochloric acid
tank.

The worker fell through the tank's metal covering and suffered chemical burns.

Five TaiPower employees and five contractor workers who helped with the
rescue also became unwell after possibly inhaling hydrochloric acid fumes.

All 11 people were taken to hospital.

The injured worker was in stable condition after regaining consciousness,
while the other 10 remained hospitalized.

The Kaohsiung Labor Affairs Bureau says the contractor violated occupational
safety rules and could face a fine of up to $3 million NT.

TaiPower says the accident did not affect power generation at the plant.
