Taiwan will not yield to China's growing coercion: VP Hsiao

Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim says Taiwan will not compromise its freedoms or
democracy in response to growing pressure from China.

In an interview with Britain's Sky News today, Hsiao said Taiwan would not
provoke China, but would also not give in to threats or military pressure.

Her comments came ahead of this week's meeting between U-S President Donald
Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Sky News reported that Chinese Coast Guard activity near Taiwan reached
record levels this summer, with the average daily number of vessels up 37.5
percent from a year earlier.

A Taiwanese Coast Guard captain said Chinese vessels were appearing on almost
every mission and increasingly resembled warships.

China's Foreign Ministry says its patrols are legitimate exercises of
jurisdiction aimed at maintaining maritime order and regional stability.
