Hormuz shipping traffic drops sharply amid Gulf tensions

Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen sharply as tensions
between the United States and Iran persist.

Shipping data show just 12 trackable commodity vessels passed through the
strait over the weekend, down from 35 the previous weekend.

Before the war began in February, around 125 large commercial vessels
typically used the waterway each day.

But the figures do not capture all oil shipments.

Middle Eastern producers are continuing to move crude through Hormuz on
tankers operating with their tracking transponders switched off.

Reuters says Saudi oil exports have recovered to more than 4-million barrels
a day this month, despite the decline in visible vessel traffic.

The strait was a route for roughly a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied
natural gas before the war.
