Spanish police clear migrants from Ceuta beaches

Spanish police and military personnel have begun clearing thousands of
migrants from beaches in Ceuta, Spain’s North African enclave.

Police fired rubber bullets into the air and used batons as crowds competed
for limited places in temporary housing.

Spain estimates that about 10,000 migrants remain in Ceuta after more than
72,000 crossed from Morocco during an unprecedented border rush in late July.

Authorities have opened a temporary shelter at the port, but it can
accommodate only 1,700 adult men. Minors are being housed separately.

Aid groups say thousands of people are still sleeping on beaches, pavements
and other public areas, and have criticized authorities for failing to
provide enough shelter.
