Rising AI costs passed on to consumers
Posted on 2026-09-19 13:31:13
The cost of building artificial intelligence systems is increasingly being
passed on to businesses and consumers.

Counterpoint Research estimates Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft and Meta will
spend a combined 750-billion U.S. dollars on infrastructure this year.

The firm says memory prices have risen about fourfold since late 2025, while
some server memory modules now cost more than 900 dollars.

Software providers are responding by raising subscription fees and including
AI features in standard packages, meaning customers may pay more even if they
do not use those tools.

PC makers are also raising prices or reducing memory in entry-level devices.

Counterpoint expects global PC memory prices to rise by up to 300 percent
this year, pushing average computer prices about 24 percent higher.
