Lai observes international earthquake drill in Taitung

President Lai Ching-te has inspected a large-scale earthquake response drill
in Taitung County involving international rescue and medical teams.

The three-day exercise simulated a magnitude 7.3 earthquake in the southern
East Rift Valley.

It tested responses to damaged infrastructure, disrupted outside assistance
and failures in communication systems.

The drill used a semi-announced format without a fixed script. It also
included evacuation, emergency shelter and medical response exercises.

More than 150 international personnel from 11 countries took part, while
representatives from a total of 18 countries observed the activities.

Lai says countries must conduct joint exercises during peacetime to establish
common procedures and improve coordination when real disasters strike.

He also says Taiwan has now trained more than 177-thousand disaster-response
volunteers.
