Climate Change Linked to Deadly Nepal Glacier Collapse
Posted on 2026-09-17 14:42:13
Scientists say climate change likely helped create the conditions behind last
month’s catastrophic glacier and rock collapse in the Himalayas.

The disaster caused severe flooding in Nepal and Tibet, killing around 1,400
people and leaving thousands missing.

Researchers from World Weather Attribution say warming temperatures have
thinned glaciers, melted permafrost and increased the amount of rain falling
instead of snow. These changes can weaken mountain slopes and increase
meltwater.

Temperatures across the Himalayan region were about five degrees Celsius
above normal in August. Researchers estimate human-caused climate change
contributed about one-point-five degrees to that increase.

However, they have not determined whether the collapse would have occurred
without climate change.
