Military Leaders Discuss Lebanon Plans After UN Mission

European and Arab military leaders are meeting in Paris to discuss security
arrangements for southern Lebanon after a United Nations peacekeeping mission
begins withdrawing in January.

The talks will assess the military and financial needs of the Lebanese Armed
Forces and consider options for a replacement mission.

Proposals include an international force backed by France and Italy, or a
European Union-led mission. Both would focus on training, equipment,
intelligence sharing and support for the Lebanese military.

The discussions come amid fears of renewed fighting between Israel and
Hezbollah.

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a U.S.-brokered framework that calls for
Israeli troops to withdraw gradually as Lebanese forces deploy in the south
and disarm Hezbollah.

However, diplomats say a breakthrough is unlikely before upcoming elections
in Israel and the United States.
