Taitung begins earthquake drills

Taitung is undergoing drills to respond to a large earthquake...

ahead of national drills this Monday.

The Taitung drills simulate a 7.3 magnitude earthquake which causes buildings
to collapse and roads to be impassable.

The exercise aims to strengthen emergency responders' skills in such a
scenario.

Today's drills began with residents' phones receiving a notification urging
them to seek shelter due to a simulated earthquake.

Taitung was chosen by the central government to be the site of the drills
this year, seeing search and rescue teams and civilian volunteers mobilized.

County officials remind the public that many disaster relief and military
vehicles will be moving throughout the county during the drills...

but residents are urged not to panic and to cooperate with traffic controls
and drill procedures.
