34 remain on death row

The number of inmates on death row has dropped to 34, after one convict died
of illness.

Lin Wang-jen was sentenced to death for allegedly killing 5 people in 2004 by
setting a karaoke bar on fire.

According to court rulings, Lin set fire to the Keelung bar because he was
upset that his wife had accepted a job there.

Lin previously filed a petition seeking a presidential pardon or commutation,
along with 13 other death row inmates, but his petition was rejected.

But after a Constitutional Court ruling in 2024 regarding the death penalty,
Lin filed for a retrial and sought a suspension of his execution.

Both requests were ultimately rejected.

This comes after the death earlier this year o another inmate.
