With the beginning of a new semester, the Health Promotion Administration is again warning that heated tobacco products can produce harmful substances.
They include carbon monoxide and the carcinogen benzo[a]pyrene, or BaP.
Citing an international study, the H-P-A also notes that heated tobacco use can cause oxidative stress and inflammation, damaging cells and tissues and increasing the risk of cancer.
The study also found that adolescents who use those products may face higher risks of asthma and allergies, as well as mental health effects.
The H-P-A stresses that heated tobacco products are not a smoking-quitting tool and should not be considered a less harmful alternative.
Taiwan currently allows only approved heated tobacco products on the market, while e-cigarettes and vapes are completely banned.
