President Lai Ching-te has wished Pope Leo the fourteenth a happy birthday, praising his "steadfast leadership" and particular vision of hope and solidarity.
That's according to Taiwan's embassy in the Vatican, which also said that the pope turned 71 yesterday.
Lai expressed his admiration for Leo's efforts to promote mutual understanding through dialogue, and said that Taiwan is committed to continuing to work with the Vatican to advance common goals.
Leo was elected in May of last year as the 267th head of the Catholic Church.
The Vatican is Taiwan's only European diplomatic ally.
