The US is praising Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim's recent trip to Italy, saying Taiwan's relationships with other countries provide big benefits to those places.
Hsiao took a weekend trip to the Italian island of Ventotene last week to participate in the European Conference for Freedom and Democracy.
Her participation was at the behest of European Parliament Vice President Pina Picierno.
The trip was not announced until she had already arrived in Europe.
Meanwhile the EU neglected to comment on the trip, instead reiterating its adherence to the "One-China Policy."
An unnamed spokesperson said that the EU is still interested in conducting exchanges with Taiwan to advance EU interests under the framework of the One-China Policy.
