Supreme Court upholds man's 5 1/2-year sentence for abusing 4-year-old

The Supreme Court has upheld a five-and-a-half-year prison sentence for a man
convicted of severely abusing his girlfriend's four-year-old son.

The sentence is final and cannot be appealed.

The man, surnamed Wang, was living with the woman and her son in Taoyuan when
the abuse took place in March 2024.

Court documents say Wang repeatedly hit the boy and kicked him, causing him
to fall and lose consciousness.

The boy suffered severe brain injuries, and medical experts said they were
highly unlikely to have been caused by an accidental fall.

Despite prolonged treatment, he was left with permanent brain damage,
impaired movement and delays in speech and cognitive development.
