Parents challenge Indonesia’s free-meal programme
Posted on 2026-09-11 14:55:14
Parents of children sickened after eating Indonesian government-funded school
meals have filed the programme's first legal challenge.

The police complaint was filed by 60 parents in Karo, North Sumatra.

At least 300 students there reportedly became ill after eating the meals in
August, and some required hospital treatment.

Their lawyer says the complaint seeks an investigation into alleged
negligence, criminal charges and financial compensation. Police are awaiting
forensic test results from food samples.

The parents are also preparing a separate lawsuit against the government.

President Prabowo Subianto's flagship programme aims to provide free meals to
83 million children and pregnant women.

But it has faced mounting safety concerns, with more than 50-thousand
suspected food-poisoning cases reported nationwide.

Indonesia recently suspended nearly 2-thousand programme kitchens for failing
to comply with sanitation requirements.
