DPP lauds VP's Italy trip

The DPP is lauding Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim's Italy trip, with caucus
leaders saying that democracies will not be intimidated.

That's after the Presidential Office annnounced Hsiao's surprise trip this
morning following her arrival in Ventotene.

DPP Legislative Caucus leader Fan Yun says, she's pleased Hsiao could make
this diplomatic breakthrough...

adding that the democratic world will not be intimidated from inviting
dialogue with democratic partners that can really contribute.

Hsiao is in Italy to participate in the Ventotene European Forum on Freedom
and Democracy.

Fan said that Taiwan will not be afraid to "go out and make friends" despite
having a malicious neighbor.

Fan also noted that the forum is being held on somewhat "hallowed ground" for
democracy, so to speak...

as Ventotene Island was once the site of the imprisonment of intellectuals
who opposed fascism.
