NATO allies disrupted Russian undersea operation
Posted on 2026-09-10 14:57:14
Britain, Norway and the United States disrupted a Russian undersea operation
near Norway's Svalbard archipelago this spring, according to Western
officials cited by Reuters.

The officials say Russian submarines were testing technology designed to
disable critical undersea cables without clearly revealing who was
responsible.

The vessels were tracked and confronted at sea before leaving the area, and
no cables were damaged.

Britain had previously disclosed that it tracked Russian submarines linked to
Moscow's deep-sea warfare directorate, known as GUGI, during a month-long
operation.

Russia denies conducting sabotage operations against NATO countries or
preparing for a confrontation with the alliance.
