The 2026 Taipei Arts Festival has opened with much fanfare, drawing over 150-thousand people Saturday and Sunday night.
They mainly gathered on the Ji-he (基河) Road, in Shi-lin District, to watch 3 giant mechanical elephants and marching bands walking down the street.
The elephants are part of the Festival's opening performance called "The Elephants Are Coming...", jointly produced by French street theater company Oposito and local groups.
Officials said the show's online livestream attracted more than 220-thousand views and over 6-thousand comments and positive reactions.
The evening procession also commemorated the 40th anniversary of the historic 1986 Taipei Zoo move from Yuan-shan (圓山) to Mu-zha (木柵)。
The Festival, organized by the Taipei Performing Arts Center, features dance, movie screenings and drama, and it runs until October 25th.
