Taichung power plant hits gas milestone on path to 2034 coal-free goal
Posted on 2026-09-05 11:09:13
Two new gas-fired units at the Taichung Power Plant have reached full-load
capacity.

This keeps them on track for commercial operation, as Premier Cho Jung-tai
(卓榮泰) reiterated a pledge to phase out coal-fired units at the facility by
2034.

The plant, with its 10 coal-fired units, has long been criticized as a major
source of pollution in Taiwan.

Cho made the remarks during an inspection of the facility organized by
state-run Taipower.

Taipower expects the No. 1 gas unit to enter commercial operation later this
month, followed by the No. 2 unit in March.

Dismantling of coal units 1 and 2 will begin in October next year.

Four additional gas units will come online in stages between 2031 and 2024,
with two more coal units scheduled to be demolished in the same timeframe.

Taipower says six other coal units will be decommissioned and placed on
emergency standby.
