Nobel Prize-winning chemist Arieh Warshel {AH-ree-ay VAR-shel} has become the first Nobel laureate to receive Taiwan's Employment Gold Card.
The National Development Council presented the card to Warshel on Friday.
Warshel won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work developing computer models to study complex chemical systems.
He is a professor at the University of Southern California and has been invited to Taiwan to serve as an honorary chair professor at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University.
The National Development Council says Warshel will work with Taiwanese researchers on talent development and research in semiconductors and other key technologies.
Taiwan launched its Employment Gold Card program in 2018 to attract highly skilled professionals from overseas.
The card combines a work permit and residency visa and allows holders to work freely in Taiwan.
