Scholars: Taiwan should diversify away from chips
Posted on 2026-09-04 11:08:13
Scholars say, Taiwan should avoid becoming overly dependent on semiconductors
while also expanding chip production with trusted partners.

A Stanford scholar made the remarks during a panel discusion on trusted
supply chains at a forum hosted by the Research Institute for Democracy,
Society, and Emerging Technology.

Experts note that the semiconductor industry has been important for Taiwan,
but that Taiwan risks devoting too many resources to a single industry...

plus, Taiwan's demographic crisis means that the industry is expanding faster
than the supply of engineers.

Scholars note that government policy could help diversify the economy and
leave room for Taiwan to have a foray into other industries, like robotics
and biotech.
