Reuters: Indonesian officials suspect food poisoning from free school meal

500 students have fallen ill from a suspected food poisoning incident in Indonesia...
amidst ongoing controversy over the school lunch program in the country.
Reuters News Agency is reporting that the students are believed to have gotten food poisoning from free meals provided by the government.
Officials say an investigation is underway.
President Prabowo Subianto launched his multibillion-dollar programme last year to eradicate under-nutrition by giving free meals to tens of millions of children.
But the plan has been plagued by food poisoning, corruption allegations, leadership changes, and a hefty price tag.
Officials say the 512 students in East Java got sick after lunch Tuesday, with 80 of them still receiving treatment.
This comes as the new head of the agency in charge of the program has vowed to reform it. z
