57 indicted over NT$900 million voice-cloning romance scam

Taipei prosecutors have indicted 57 people over an alleged romance scam that
defrauded more than 20-thousand people of at least 900 million NT.

Prosecutors say the group used fake dating profiles, bogus sales pitches and
AI voice-cloning technology to target victims.

The group allegedly built romantic relationships with victims before asking
them for money, gifts and payments for various products and services.

Women involved in the operation also allegedly met some victims in person and
collected cash and expensive gifts.

Prosecutors say an engineer developed software that allowed members of the
group to imitate the voices of women involved in the scheme during phone
calls.

The alleged ring was led by a man surnamed Huang and his wife, surnamed Hsu.

Prosecutors are seeking prison terms of at least 25 years for Huang and 18
years for Hsu.
