China Warns Taiwan Over Pacific Summit Appearance

China has warned Taiwan of consequences after officials from Beijing and
Taipei attended a Pacific leaders summit in Palau.

The meeting brings together 18 member states and territories of the Pacific
Islands Forum.

China, the U-S and Taiwan are not members, but all three have significant
interests in the region.

Palau is one of the few countries that maintains diplomatic ties with Taiwan
and has hosted joint events with Taipei's representative.

A Chinese envoy called Taiwan's presence at the summit "very inappropriate"
and hinted that Beijing could take action.

The dispute highlights growing competition among major powers for influence
in the Pacific.
