KMT, DPP trade barbs over low birthrate

The KMT and DPP are arguing over the reason for Taiwan's low birthrate and
what needs to be done to ameliorate it.

KMT caucus chief deputy secretary-general Hsu Yu-chen (許宇甄) today said that
after a decade of the DPP in charge, young people are afraid to have
children. Hsu blamed poor governmence.

DPP caucus whip Chuang Jui-hsiung (莊瑞雄) said it was oversimplifying and
politicizing to characterize the problem as a "government failure." Rather,
he said it was something both parties agreed was a national security issue
... and that it ought to be resolved on a bipartisan basis.

The comments come after the National Development Council released a
projection that Taiwan's population will fall by around half by 2075 based on
existing data and trends.
