The KMT and DPP are arguing over the reason for Taiwan's low birthrate and what needs to be done to ameliorate it.
KMT caucus chief deputy secretary-general Hsu Yu-chen (許宇甄) today said that after a decade of the DPP in charge, young people are afraid to have children. Hsu blamed poor governmence.
DPP caucus whip Chuang Jui-hsiung (莊瑞雄) said it was oversimplifying and politicizing to characterize the problem as a "government failure." Rather, he said it was something both parties agreed was a national security issue ... and that it ought to be resolved on a bipartisan basis.
The comments come after the National Development Council released a projection that Taiwan's population will fall by around half by 2075 based on existing data and trends.
