Taiwan's population projected to nearly halve by 2075: NDC
Posted on 2026-08-29 12:10:13
The latest population forecast released by the National Development Council
projects that Taiwan's population could fall by half over the next 50 years
amid a falling birth rate and an aging society.

The forecast is based on household registration data, including births,
deaths and migration.

The NDC estimated that Taiwan's population will fall to just over 12 million
in 2075.

The population is projected to fall below 20 million in 2045.

The percentage of people 65 and over eclipsed 20 percent last year, meeting
the definition of a super-aged society.

The projection puts the super-aged at 37 percent in 2045 and 53 percent in
2075.

The NDC said the number of women aged 20-49 peaked in 2005, while the number
of newborns hit a new low of 108,000 last year and is expected to fall below
100,000 this year.
