President Lai Ching-te has announced that his administration will launch a "health coin" incentive program in October which aims to boost the number of people getting health checks, cancer screening, and preventive care.
According to Lai, the program will serve as a new model to incentivize digital health management - and will be led by the Ministry of Health, which will employ technology and incentives to encourage healthier habits.
Speaking at a meeting of his Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee, Lai said the goal of the program is to make preventive care a more regular part of daily life.
Lai also stressed that the program will bring together government and private sector to improve public health.
The Health Promotion Administration says the "health coin" program will reward people for taking health-promoting actions and is open to all citizens aged 18 or above.
The initial phase would reward people for participating in health-promoting activities via the National Health Insurance app.
When participants have earned a minimum of 1,000 coins via the app, they will be able to use them to claim healthy foods or health promotion services at partnered convenience stores and supermarkets.
