Pentagon official to brief NATO allies on troop review

A senior Pentagon official is set to brief NATO ambassadors today amid concern over possible further cuts to U.S. forces in Europe.
Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby is leading a six-month review of the U.S. military presence on the continent.
Washington currently has about 80-thousand troops in Europe but has already announced some withdrawals and reduced forces assigned to NATO defense plans.
European officials say they remain uncertain whether the review is a genuine consultation or a tool to pressure allies.
The United States has sent NATO members a questionnaire covering defense spending, military procurement, basing rights and support for U.S. foreign policy.
European diplomats are expected to use today's meeting to emphasize their growing defense contributions and reassure Washington that it can rely on its allies.
