Qatar seeks to restart U.S.-Iran diplomacy

Qatar's prime minister is traveling to Tehran today in an effort to restart
diplomacy between Iran and the United States.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani is expected to discuss Qatar's
mediation efforts and ways to reduce regional tensions.

He will also push for the restoration of free navigation through the Strait
of Hormuz, a major route for global oil supplies.

Fighting between the United States and Iran has largely paused, but no formal
peace negotiations are underway.

Traffic through the strait has fallen sharply since the war began in
February, with oil flows dropping to about 5-million barrels a day.

Iran has sought to use its control of the waterway as leverage.

Talks between Iran and Oman over managing the strait and sharing revenue
remain unresolved.
