Sardines stranded in Penghu stone fish weir
Posted on 2026-08-27 12:24:15
Large numbers of sardines became stranded inside a traditional stone fish
weir in Penghu as the tide went out yesterday.

The owner discovered the fish during a routine inspection of the structure
near Wude in Magong.

News quickly spread, and residents arrived with nets and buckets to collect
the fresh catch.

Local fishermen say the sardines likely followed the rising tide toward shore
to feed on seaweed, but failed to escape before the water receded.

Pacific reef herons were also seen circling the area in search of a meal.

Several other migratory fish species have been found trapped in Wude's stone
fish weirs this year, which fishermen say reflects the diversity of the
area's marine life.
