Hsiao urges lawmakers to back drone defense budget
Posted on 2026-08-26 12:11:13
Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim is urging lawmakers to back the government's
210-billion N.T. special budget for military drones, saying delays could
weaken Taiwan's deterrence and international confidence.

In an interview with CNA, Hsiao said drone capabilities are urgently needed
to prevent Beijing from misjudging Taiwan's determination to defend itself.

The proposal would fund coastal surveillance and attack drones, as well as
unmanned attack boats, with the Defense Ministry overseeing procurement based
on military needs.

Hsiao said the plan is separate from a six-year, 44.2-billion N.T. program
aimed at developing Taiwan's wider drone industry.

She said large government orders, international cooperation, and AI
technology could help Taiwan expand domestic production and build a globally
competitive, non-China supply chain.

Lawmakers have yet to reach agreement on competing versions of the special
legislation.
