Guinea Landfill Landslide Kills 30

In Guinea, a mountainous heap of refuse has collapsed in the largest landfill
in the capital, killing 30 people.

Heavy rain started around 2 a.m. on Sunday and washed over the refuse,
triggering a landslide that buried nearby shacks.

An official said the site was designated for closure on Sunday.

Locals living around the landfill had been given eviction notices.

Many had left, but many others were still around when the landslide happened.

Guinea is mineral-rich, but according to the World Bank, 43.7% of the
population of the west African country lives below the national poverty line.
