Officials are maintaining a red alert for Hualien's Wan-li river barrier lake, warning that it could overflow despite the water level actually going down since early this morning.
Hualien authorities note that the amount of water in the lake has decreased by about one million tonnes, but emphasize that the risk of danger remains present.
The Hualien branch of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency says, the water level began decreasing this morning around 1am and continued for about 4 hours...
with the water level dropping by about 2.4 meters in total.
Officials say that the risk of flood is for now mostly confined to the river channel...
so the area is currently off-limits to the public, as residents are urged the remain vigilant.
