Canadian and American officials are blaming each other for leaving the negotiating table just ahead of a deadline for resolving a tariff dispute.
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney said "last-minute changes in the US proposed terms were unfair," while US trade representative Garrison Greer said Canada passed up an offer that would have given it the best deal on tariffs among all of the US's trading partners.
As of midnight, the US started imposing 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian products that account for about 5% of what Canada ships to the United States every year.
Carney said, "Canada will match those tariffs dollar for dollar to protect our workers and businesses."
He added that his government would announce additional support for Canadian workers and businesses in the coming days.
According to AP, a senior Trump administration official told reporters that Canada sought concessions on Trump tariffs on steel, aluminum, cars and lumber that the United States was unwilling to provide.
