Canada's Carney: To match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar'
Posted on 2026-08-22 13:08:13
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney said a breakdown in negotiations between the US and Canada was due to the American side introducing last-minute terms that were "unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal."
Carney said Canada was ready to match US tariffs "dollar for dollar" after an extended deadline for the two sides to avert an impasse over Trump's threatened 50% tariffs on some Canadian goods elapsed at noon Taiwan time.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada walked away "despite the US offer to Canada to receive the best treatment of any major exporter to our market."
I'll have more on this developing story later this afternoon.
