High Court acquits sitting, former lawmakers in SOGO corruption case

The Taiwan High Court has overturned the corruption convictions of incumbent
KMT legislator Chen Chao-ming and former New Power Party legislator Hsu
Yung-ming ...

.... acquitting both in a case involving the ownership of Pacific SOGO
department stores.

However, the court upheld the convictions of former DPP legislator Su
Chen-ching (蘇震清) and former KMT legislator Liao Kuo-tung (廖國棟) ...

... who were sentenced to 10 years and eight years and six months in prison,
respectively.

Prosecutors alleged that businessman Lee Heng-lung paid lawmakers to use
their influence to help him regain control of SOGO, including by pushing for
changes to company law.

The case dates back to alleged payments made from 2012 onward, with lawmakers
later accused of pressuring the Ministry of Economic Affairs to amend
relevant regulations.

The ruling can still be appealed.
