Taiwan urges release of Hong Kong activists convicted of subversion

The Mainland Affairs Council is calling for the immediate release of the two Hong Kong pro-democracy activists convicted under the city's national security law.
Former Hong Kong Alliance chairman Lee Cheuk-yan and former vice chairwoman Chow Hang-tung were convicted today of inciting subversion of state power.
The now-defunct Alliance had organized annual commemorations of the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown and advocated democracy and freedom in China.
Taiwan's government expressed deep regret over the convictions, accusing Beijing and Hong Kong authorities of using national security laws to suppress dissent.
The council also urged the authorities to release others detained in the case and respect freedom of speech, human rights and the rule of law.
