NCSIST looking into satellite launch anomaly
Posted on 2026-08-20 07:00:15
The National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology says it is
investigating the cause of an accident during the test launch of satellite
launch rocket at its Jiupeng Base in Pingtung.

The incident occured Wednesday morning.

The state arms developer said the satellite launch vehicle being tested for
the first time and self-destructed after experiencing an anomaly shortly
after taking off.

The institute says the rocket deviated from its intended trajectory during
the initial stage of flight, prompting operators to activate its
self-destruct mechanism in line with pre-established emergency procedures.

Authorities say the crash in a mountainous area of Mudan Township was
within the planned safety control area, and there were no injuries or
property damage.

Local media reports say residents of villages near the test site saw the
rocket spiral out of control shortly after liftoff before crashing,
triggering alarm among some nearby communities.

The Pingtung County Government has called on institute to suspend further
launch tests, review its launch procedures, and adjust future flight paths to
avoid villages and other residential communities.
