The Filming Taipei Screenplay Competition has announced 16 finalists from a record 267 submissions this year.
The entries cover genres ranging from science fiction and crime to comedy, musicals and action-adventure, with many drawing on Taipei's landscapes, history and city life.
Actor and jury member Wu Ke-xi (吳可熙) is encouraging aspiring screenwriters to draw inspiration from their own experiences.
Wu says writers should "live wildly," meet different people and experience as much as possible, because those moments can later become material for stories.
Producer Tsou Chieh-chung (鄒介中) says international audiences are increasingly interested in stories with strong local character, and writers should focus on naturally incorporating Taiwan's culture and everyday life rather than trying to cater specifically to overseas markets.
