Belgium battles record wildfire near German border

In Europe, firefighters are battling Belgium's largest wildfire on record as
the blaze moves toward the German border.

Authorities say the fire has burned about 3-thousand hectares in the High
Fens nature reserve since Friday.

Crews from Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg are working alongside the military
and farmers, while Dutch helicopters are helping from the air.

Residents evacuated from nearby villages have been told not to return yet.

Officials in the German border have also advised some residents to leave
because of heavy smoke, although the fire itself is not expected to cross
into Germany.

The European Union has deployed additional firefighting aircraft.

The blaze comes as heatwaves and drought continue to fuel severe wildfires
across parts of Europe.
