Thailand pledges to strengthen gun controls

Now turning to international news...

Thailand says, it will tighten gun control and crack down on illegal
firearms.

That's following two deadly shootings near Bangkok.

In the first, a student opened fire at his high school and his house, killing
at least 8 people.

Three days afterwards, a former lawmaker was arrested after a shooting at a
government office.

Officials say, they will aim to raise awareness about gun responsibilities
and strengthen regulations.

The Prime Minister ordered an urgent review of gun regulations, including a
suspension of new permits.

Thailand has restrictive gun laws but a relatively high rate of gun ownership
in Asia.

Currently, penalties for illegally owning a firearm in Thailand include
prison terms of up to 10 years and fines of up to 600 US dollars.

But critics say, there are weaknesses in enforcement.
